In short
The biofield is the combined electromagnetic and subtle-energetic field a living body generates. It can be imaged with aura cameras (GDV/Kirlian variants), measured by SQUID magnetometers, and inferred from biophoton emission counts. Subtle Energy Sciences’ pilot studies show measurable biofield reorganization — increased coherence, increased radiant area, increased symmetry — after 30–40 minutes of exposure to energetically encoded audio or visual programs. The biofield is not a metaphor; it’s where the technology operates.
What is the biofield?
The biofield is the composite energetic field a living organism generates. It includes the electromagnetic component every textbook on physiology acknowledges — heart, brain, and skeletal muscle all produce measurable fields at fT (femtotesla) and pT (picotesla) ranges — and a subtle-energetic component that conventional measurement tools register indirectly: through coherence patterns, biophoton emission, GDV corona discharge, and bio-impedance.
The term “biofield” was formally adopted by the U.S. National Institutes of Health Office of Alternative Medicine in 1992. Since then, it has become the standard scientific term for what older traditions called the aura, the etheric body, prana, qi, or chi. The Consciousness and Healing Initiative and the International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine (ISSSEEM) maintain the modern research program; published peer-reviewed work spans heart-rate variability, GDV bioelectrography, infrared thermography, and emerging quantum-biology approaches.
For the practical purposes of working with Subtle Energy Sciences programs: the biofield is the layer between the conscious intent of a person and the biochemistry of their body. Programs that affect the biofield can affect downstream physiology — that’s the design hypothesis, and it’s the hypothesis the pilot studies below were designed to interrogate.
How the biofield is measured
Four measurement approaches dominate current biofield research, each with strengths and limits:
1. Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV / EPC)
GDV imaging captures the corona discharge from a fingertip placed in a high-frequency, low-current electromagnetic field. The patterns and intensity of the discharge correlate with autonomic nervous system state, biofield symmetry, and overall energetic coherence. GDV equipment (Kirlionics, BioWell) is widely used in Russian and European integrative medicine clinics; the protocol is reproducible and well-instrumented. Limitations: indirect — what GDV measures is the body’s electromagnetic response to a stimulus, not the biofield itself.
2. Aura imaging cameras
Aura cameras (InnerActive, Aura-Imaging, WinAura) use galvanic skin response sensors combined with biofeedback to render a visual representation of the field around a subject. The output is a chromatic field overlay synchronized to seven major chakras and overall energetic balance. Stronger as a comparison instrument (before/after, intervention-vs-control) than as an absolute measure, since the rendering parameters depend on calibration.
3. Biophoton emission counting
Cells emit ultraweak photon emissions (UPE) — “biophotons” — in the 200–800 nm range, first measured rigorously by Fritz-Albert Popp in the 1970s. Photomultiplier tube arrays count these emissions with single-photon sensitivity. Coherence of biophoton emission correlates with cell health; chaotic emission patterns correlate with stress and disease. Limits: equipment is expensive and slow to operate; most research happens at university physics labs (University of Tübingen, International Institute of Biophysics).
4. SQUID magnetometry
Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices measure the magnetic component of the biofield directly, at femtotesla sensitivity. The HeartMath Institute’s magnetocardiograph work and Schwartz et al.’s pioneering studies on healers’ hands used SQUID magnetometers. The instrument is the gold standard for the electromagnetic component; the subtle-energetic component remains harder to capture with any single device, which is why current research triangulates across multiple modalities.
What our pilot studies show
Eric Thompson conducted two pilot studies during the iAwake Technologies research period that anchor the biofield claims for the Subtle Energy catalog. Both used commercially available imaging instruments — neither was self-instrumented or self-reported — and both showed measurable biofield reorganization after 30–40 minutes of exposure to an energetically encoded audio program.

In the aura-camera pilot, subjects listened to a prototype iAwake biofield CD on headphones for 30–40 minutes. Pre- and post-session aura imaging captured a measurable shift from a low-and-imbalanced baseline to a HIGH and BALANCED overall energy reading. The protocol was deliberately simple — listen, image — because the goal was hypothesis-generating, not double-blind verification.

In the biophotonic imaging pilot, a clinical study examined the HeartWave Meditation produced by iAwake Technologies. Researchers used a biophotonic GDV scanner to observe the biofield. Three indicators improved substantively: biofield area, organ-system function, and chakra balance. Heart coherence was also captured before and after — the same EmWave protocol HeartMath uses — and showed increases over the session.
Two caveats are honest to state. First, these were pilots, not randomized controlled trials. The sample sizes are small, and a full peer-reviewed RCT for any specific Subtle Energy product has not yet been published. Second, the technology has evolved meaningfully since these images were captured — current Quantum Resonance Apps use a refined Energetic Encoding Technology process Eric continued to develop after the iAwake period. We surface the original imagery rather than synthesize newer claims without re-measurement.
Why the biofield is the target of Subtle Energy programs
The design hypothesis behind every Subtle Energy program is that biofield state precedes physiological state on a useful timescale. A coherent biofield correlates with parasympathetic activation, lower inflammatory markers, better sleep, and clearer cognition. A chaotic biofield correlates with the opposite — and a person can typically feel the difference long before lab work registers it.
Programs work at the biofield layer by broadcasting an energetic signature: the amplified, encoded resonance pattern of a substance, frequency, or geometric form. When a phone, tablet, or speaker plays a Subtle Energy file, the device functions as a broadcast antenna for that signature. The signature interacts with the biofield in the same way nearby fields generally do — by entrainment, by coherence transfer, by resonance.
This framing is intended to support wellness practice. It is not medical treatment. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not evaluated any Subtle Energy program for the treatment, cure, or prevention of any disease. The aim is biofield support — that’s the layer the technology is built for and the layer we measure.
