Slim Spurling was a man who lived with intention, purpose, and a knack for turning the seemingly impossible into reality. He wasn’t your average tinkerer or inventor. He was a maverick—a true pioneer who believed in the power of energy and its potential to heal not just individuals, but the planet itself. Let’s dive into the fascinating life of Slim Spurling, a man who spent his years exploring the interplay of art, science, and the mysteries of subtle energy.
From Humble Beginnings to the Great Outdoors
Born in 1938 in Aberdeen, South Dakota, Slim grew up with a strong connection to the natural world. Life on the prairie instilled in him a deep appreciation for nature’s beauty and its raw, untamed energy. This wasn’t just a childhood filled with sunsets and wildflowers, though—Slim had an early thirst for knowledge. He wasn’t content to just observe; he wanted to understand how everything fit together.
Slim’s curiosity drove him to study forestry and art at Colorado State University in the late 1950s. Yes, forestry and art. That’s a combination you don’t see every day, but it says a lot about Slim’s multifaceted mind. He saw the forest as a canvas and nature as a masterpiece waiting to be understood. Though he didn’t finish his degree, his time at CSU laid the foundation for his future work. He learned how to see the world through both scientific and artistic lenses—a perspective that would define his life’s mission.
A Man of Many Hats (and Tools)
After leaving CSU, Slim’s path wasn’t a straight line. He wore many hats over the years: artist, craftsman, and environmental researcher, to name a few. Slim’s artistic pursuits were anything but conventional. He specialized in bronze sculpture, a medium that perfectly married his love for raw materials and precise craftsmanship. You might say he had a knack for taking the rigid and making it fluid—a skill that would come in handy later when he began working with subtle energy.
But Slim wasn’t just about creating art. He was also deeply committed to solving real-world problems, particularly those related to the environment. By the late 1970s, Slim found himself immersed in research on pollution and its impact on ecosystems. He didn’t just want to study the problem—he wanted to fix it. His work was driven by a deep concern for humanity’s relationship with the Earth, and he was determined to find ways to harmonize the two.
A Brush with the Esoteric
Slim’s journey took a fascinating turn in the 1980s when he began exploring the world of subtle energy and its applications. This wasn’t some casual dabbling; Slim dove headfirst into the mysteries of the universe. He was particularly intrigued by the concept of using energy to create balance and harmony—both in individuals and in the environment.
This is where Slim’s story becomes truly unique. He began developing tools designed to interact with subtle energy fields, including his now-famous Light-Life Rings. These devices, he claimed, could help purify water, improve air quality, and even enhance human well-being. Skeptics might raise an eyebrow, but Slim wasn’t deterred. He believed in the power of his creations and was determined to share them with the world.
It All Started with Two Pieces of Wire
The story begins with Slim and his friend Bill Reid. The two shared a curiosity for understanding energy, and they weren’t afraid to experiment. One day, they decided to build something called a caduceus coil. Using nothing more than an iron rod and a discarded lamp cord, they whipped it up in about 20 minutes. Their first experiment with this coil revealed something remarkable: its beam of energy could penetrate glass and water over a distance. This small success hinted at something much larger—a potential to interact with the subtle, unseen energies that surround us.
As their experiments progressed, Slim and Bill began treating water with the caduceus coil. The results were nothing short of transformative. Not only did the treated water develop healing properties, but it also showed immediate energetic changes. This marked the beginning of their journey into the realm of subtle energy tools.
A Ring That Changed Everything
Slim and Bill’s experiments with water eventually led to the creation of the first prototype of the Light-Life™ Ring. Unlike the more refined versions that came later, this ring had a dual nature: one side emitted a positive effect, while the other had a negative one. When they placed a gallon of water within the positive field of the ring, they discovered something incredible. The water’s aura expanded from just an inch to an impressive four feet—and it happened instantaneously. What previously took 12 hours to potentize water could now be done in seconds.
Excited by these results, Slim and Bill began drinking the water themselves and offering it to others, including people suffering from serious ailments like multiple sclerosis and Hodgkin’s disease. One case stood out: a powerful attorney, already debilitated by chemotherapy and radiation for Hodgkin’s disease, started drinking the ring-treated water. In just six weeks, follow-up medical tests revealed no sign of disease. Doctors dismissed the recovery as a “misdiagnosis,” but Slim and Bill saw it as proof of the healing potential of their work.
The “Ammonia Event”
One of the most dramatic moments in Slim’s early discoveries came during what he called the “Ammonia Event.” Slim had been working in a lab filled with toxic ammonium sulfide fumes, and his health was suffering. Frustrated, he decided to experiment by placing a Light-Life™ Ring on top of a two-by-four over one of the ammonia tanks. The next morning, Slim returned to the lab and found something astonishing: the tank no longer emitted toxic fumes.
He excitedly shared his findings with his colleagues, but they were unimpressed. In frustration, Slim directed a bolt of his own energy into the second tank—using nothing but his will. To his amazement, that tank also stopped emitting fumes. This moment was a revelation for Slim. It confirmed that the energy field of the ring was closely tied to the life energy inherent in human beings. He realized that toxins could be neutralized by what he called “life energy,” an idea that seemed almost too simple to be true—but also too powerful to ignore.
Harnessing Energy to Calm Stormy Weather
Slim’s experiments weren’t confined to the lab. One stormy afternoon, he decided to test the Light-Life™ Ring’s ability to influence weather. As a menacing gray-green storm cloud approached, Slim grabbed a ring and swept it back and forth across the storm front. In less than a minute, the lightning in his area stopped. Intrigued, Slim called Bill and asked him to try the same thing. Bill, who lived five miles away, repeated the experiment and saw identical results. This unexpected ability to “calm storms” added another layer of mystery to their discoveries and hinted at the broader environmental applications of their work.
Collaboration with Visionaries
Slim’s journey into the science of subtle energy wasn’t a solo venture. He collaborated with other visionaries, including Bob Dratch, Hans Becker, and Boyd Bushman. Each of these thinkers brought unique perspectives to the table. Hans Becker, for instance, contributed insights into the tensor field, a concept that became central to understanding how the Light-Life™ Ring worked. Boyd Bushman, a senior scientist, shared his knowledge of magnetic fields, providing scientific underpinnings for Slim’s more intuitive discoveries.
Healing Through Biofeedback
One of the most compelling aspects of Slim’s work was its connection to biofeedback. The idea was simple: by interacting with the body’s energy field, the Light-Life™ Ring could influence physical, mental, and emotional states. Trained clairvoyants often described a golden glow emanating from the positive side of the ring, further validating its subtle but significant effects. Slim and Bill took great care to mark the positive side of each ring to ensure they avoided any negative or destructive effects during their experiments.
Lessons from the Early Years
Slim’s early discoveries laid the groundwork for an emerging science of subtle energy. While skeptics might point to the lack of “hard proof,” Slim’s work reminds us that true understanding often comes from thinking outside the box. Whether it was neutralizing toxins, healing the sick, or calming a storm, Slim and Bill demonstrated that subtle energy could have profound, real-world applications.
Their story is a testament to the power of curiosity and persistence. Slim once remarked that the secrets of the universe are often surprisingly simple, and his work serves as a reminder that sometimes, the greatest discoveries come from listening to intuition and embracing the unknown.
The science of subtle energy is still in its infancy, but Slim’s pioneering work offers a glimpse into what’s possible. From healing water to transforming the environment, the potential applications are vast. His journey is an invitation to question, experiment, and, above all, stay curious.

I have done the computations and have no idea where he got 144 MHz.
Having written Reverse Engineering the Great Pyramid, I am extremely familiar with the Royal Cubit of 20.60659 Pyramid inches. In sonic frequencies within the Great Pyramid, having a speed of sound about 345 m/sec, one Royal Cubit results in a frequency of 660 Hz. This and many other frequencies were converted to electromagnetic frequencies via electromagnetic-acoustic conversion. I have no idea where Slim got his figures.
Thanks for the information. I appreciate your input. For me, though, even if your assessment is correct, it doesn’t detract from the fact that Slim’s devices produce subtle energetic streams that can be detected using certain methods. As one who has been experimentally and experientially involved in working with these kinds of energetic streams for a good while, I can say that Slim was definitely doing something right, even if some of his details were incorrect. That said, I sincerely appreciate your comment.
